How can we expropriate money from banks?
Núria Guëll's artistic intervention
In 2011, after the global financial crisis that broke out in 2008, the artist Núria Guëll organized several dissemination and citizen training platforms providing strategies for expropriating money from banks. The idea was to draw up a plan to apply to banks the same law that they use for their clients: the fractional reserve system, which is the mechanism through which banks create money out of nothing.
She divided the artistic intervention into two phases. The first one consisted in an educational meeting under the title “How can we expropriate money from banks?” conducted by the economist Qmunty and the bank expropriators Lucio Urtubia and Enric Duran. The second was the development and publication of a handbook with different expropriation strategies, legal advice, and reflexive texts, which she distributed free of charge.
